2 Degrees – New NZ mobile network launching in August 2009
If you haven’t seen the ads on NZ tv already, there is finally going to be another telecommunications provider to take on Telecom and Vodafone who promises to shake things up by providing better value, lower cost mobile plans. Telstra failed, hopefully 2 Degrees won’t!
As part of their launch promotion ‘Join the Chinwag‘, they will send you out a SIM card with $5 credit if you leave your details on the 2 Degrees website.
I am eagerly waiting for August to roll round and see what they offer as I know New Zealand is one of the most expensive mobile usage countries in the world.
Let’s hope 2 Degrees is the big white knight in shining armour they are making themselves out to be. If they are, they should certainly give Vodafone and Telecom a run for their money!

Sweden’s web usage drops by nearly half from copyright law
For a country’s web usage to drop by 40% is certainly saying something, and that is what has exactly happened in Sweden by introducing their copyright law.
It is believed file-swappers have reduced their activity for fear of getting caught.

Def Leppard and Lionel Richie record same song ‘Long Long Way To Go’
Def Leppard has always been a favourite band of mine since I first heard Hysteria and Pyromania back in the day.
In 2002, they released their 8th studio album called ‘X’. There is a ballad on there called ‘Long Long Way To Go‘ which I always thought was a great sentimental pop song which deserved to be a hit.
I have since discovered Lionel Richie also did a version of the very same song!
I still prefer the Def Leppard version but I like hearing the slighly different interpretation from Mr Richie.
Check it out and see what you think!

Finally understanding songs from the past
Have you ever listened to a song you loved from yester-year just to have its meaning click now and you can fully relate to it?
For me, especially when I was younger, it was the melodies and hooks that drew me into a song and at times I’d just sing along without really understanding what the lyrics meant or what the emotion was behind the song.
I recently listened to a Mr. Big track that I hadn’t heard in years. As soon as it started, the words came flooding back to me and I started singing along.
The difference this time was that as I started to sing along, the meaning of the words really hit me as I could relate to them now where as I hadn’t before.
Mr. Big are best known for their hit acoustic song ‘To Be With You‘ but the song I’m referring to is ‘Just Take My Heart‘, both are from their album ‘Lean Into In‘ released in 1991.

Quick Musical Thought To Ponder
As musicians, we strive to make a career from music, to earn money from our art form and to live off what we love doing.
So what happens if a musician then performs strictly motivated by the money?
Hmmmmm.
James Hetfield interview on christian science
When I was in Wellington recently, I came across this building with the following across the front, ‘Christian Science Church’.
I thought about how that could possibly be since in my mind, Christianity and science contradict one another!
I’m glad I got shown the following video interview. In it, James Hetfield from Metallica explains how his family brought him up as a christian scientist.
‘The God That Failed’ from Metallica’s Black Album is all about his childhood experience with christian science and the difficulties that went with it.

Update
I haven’t blogged much lately, largely due to the holiday season and secondly because I’ve been immersing myself in some rock star biography books!
I’ve recently read Tommyland by Tommy Lee, Slash’s bio and now I’m working my way through The Heroin Diaries by Nikki Sixx.
Very interesting reading for any budding rock star! I might do some reviews on them later.
The Loudness War is harming music!
Have you noticed how your cd’s have been progressively been getting louder over the years?
This is thanks to The Loudness War where some people believe that louder is better.
Unfortunately, you can only push the perceived boundaries of loudness so far before the audio quality suffers as was the very noticeable case of Metallica’s recent album ‘Death Magnetic’.
Music is supposed to breath and have dynamics and when you try and make it louder, it loses its dynamic range and possibly even suffers distortion as a consequence.

Music Can Improve Your Health!
Over on the Simpleology blog, there is a very interesting post about how scientists are recommending music to improve and boost your health.
We know that your emotional and mental state can affect your health and stress is a classic example of how it can negatively impact it.
Since music creates and stimulates emotions in the listener, it makes sense that music can be used to improve your emotional and mental state, in turn boosting and providing health benefits.
Who needs pills when you can turn up your favourite music?!
