Why does firefox use so much cpu?!

FireFox logoLately I was noticing that my ever trusty Firefox 3 had become a bit of a CPU hog. Perhaps it had a memory leak? Maybe I was running too many add-ons? The answer is much simpler than that!

Thankfully, there is a very quick and simple tweak you can make to make Firefox snappy again.

Read about this Firefox fix and see if it helps!

Google Wave – Web 2.0 Email & Instant Messaging

Google Wave screenshotGoogle Wave is Google’s next generation email and instant messaging web 2.0 client. It hasn’t been released yet as it’s still under development but the demonstration video they have posted indicates they have a very cool product on their hands!

I’ve only watched the first 30min of this 80min demonstration video but already there is some great innovation taking place at Google with this new idea of theirs.

Imagine email that also behaves like an IM that can mix in with blog commenting and pull all sorts of communication into a single place. That’s my kinda half assed description of what Google Wave can do!

To get Google’s official description of what it can do, check out the Google Wave website.

Paint.net – The FREE Photoshop Alternative

I stumbled upon Paint.net the other day and was highly impressed with this piece of FREE software.

Unlike Microsoft Paint, this is a different and much more powerful piece of image editing software.

You can work with layers, apply gradients, manipulate image and canvas sizing and many other of the necessary cool features that Photoshop has.

Obviously it doesn’t have the super features that Photoshop has but Paint.net is a great for the standard image and photo tweaking stuff to satisfy anyone who isn’t a professional graphics designer and it won’t cost you anything to do it.

Following Famous People on Twitter

I have really fallen back in love with Twitter again after finding a whole lot of known artists on Twitter and following them.

Some of their tweets are inspiring, some are just plain silly but either way it’s a really cool way of feeling more closely connected with these people, which I guess is the main point of Twitter in the first place!

Some of the artists I’m following:

A Quick Look at Google Picasa 3

My personal opinion of Google Picasa 3 is that it is a fantastic improvement on Picasa 2.

They have played around with the menu a little bit but my favourite aspects are the additional features that lacked in Picasa 2.

The ‘red eye removal’ is far superior than the previous version and I actually use it now rather than fixing it in Photoshop.

The ‘retouch’ tool is a cool feature to play with if you want to remove blemishes from photos.

You also now have the ability to write text on your images which you couldn’t do before.

It’s still a very easy to use program and if you take lots of snaps with your digital camera, I highly recommend using Picasa to management and tweak your photo collection.

Check out the Google Photos blog.

The Easiest Way to Resize Images

You could use applications like Adobe Photoshop or Google Picasa (free) to resize your images. Thing is, they carry a lot of extra features which you may not necessarily need.

The easiest method I have found to resize images from your digital camera down to a respectable size that you can email of upload to Facebook, Myspace, etc is to use the Microsoft PowerToys for XP Image Resizer.

Of course this is for Windows XP only, sorry Mac or Vista users.

It’s only 521K in size and once installed, all you need to do is right click on your image file and select ‘Resize Pictures’.

You’ll then be given some resizing options and then voila, you have optimised and resized your image in just a few clicks!. You’ve just changed that 2MB pic into around a 40KB pic!

Gmail now has Voice and Video Chat!

This is a very cool additional feature in my book.

Is Google looking to take on Skype perhaps?

Dunno but now it makes Gmail an even more impressive communication tool.
