Social media statistics 2011
As you’ll see from these social media statistics 2011, social media usage literally exploded in 2011, Facebook went from 600 million users to 800 million user in just one year! I thought I’d share a few thoughts on Facebook as it’s the biggie a lot of people talk about.
Facebook for brands and business
I found the social media statistics for brands on Facebook particularly interesting. It reinforced to me that what people think of you offline is reflected online.
Being on Facebook will not automatically change that perception or magically connect you to a new audience just because you have a presence there.
- 58% will like a brand because they are already a customer
- 57% will like a brand because they want to receive discounts and promotions
Why average Facebook page updates won’t cut it
To make things trickier, 77% will just read posts and updates which means less than a quarter of a brand’s audience on Facebook actually interacts at all!
When you factor in that Facebook has an EdgeRank algorithm based on interaction that determines IF (yes if) a brand’s page update is seen at all in the news feed of a Facebook user, an average Facebook strategy is definitely not going to cut it.
A user is thinking “What’s in it for me and why should I care?” so as a brand, how do you answer that?
